I am not usually a huge fan of Bose, but these Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones really impressed me.
To people who think that in-ear earphones (such as the etymotic) keep noise out just as effectively: That is correct, but have you ever tried to wear in-the-ear earphones all the way through an 8 hour flight? It isn't fun.
To those people who complain that Bose headphones cause aching pressure on the ear: This might be true. I've never noticed it. Not everyone does. Either in-ear earbud headphones or over-ear active antinoise both cause pain to some. Your sensitivity to that stimuli may differ.
To the music-lover who doesn't like the Bose-ization of the sound: The engine roar in an airplane is thunderous (my research indicates 90 to 100 decibels) and airline seats cannot present the best listening environment for audiophile-grade headphones. The needs are not the same and Bose utilizes active equalization to offer engaging sound quality in a distracting environment using an easy-to-wear headphone that can be worn not only for music, but certainly for noise-cancelled quiet. Nobody is trying to craft the next B&W 802.

headphones are the finest I've used. They are the most comfortable to keep on your head, even after hours of straight use. The batteries last ages - my present pair still functions well even after 1 year of heavy use. The noise cancellation truly functions well. The sound is heavily equalized so that you will clearly percieve the extreme frequencies (both highs and lows) even on top of the overpowering engine noise. It makes for the highest quality headphone in the air. You can also turn them on and relax in the stillness in a variety of settings.
I highly recommend these Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones, because not only do they have good sound quality for music, they also offer you peace and quiet when necessary.
